2008 Event is
Feb. 23rd and 24th
It is almost that one time of year when locals looking to spice up a home or office space can purchase museum quality art in Tulsa, OK. The
third weekend in
February, the 2008 NatureWorks Wildlife Art Show and Sale continues. The show moved to the RENAISSANCE Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center ( 71st and US-169)
in 2007 and
continues to grow and improve since it is soon to reach four decades of success.
Sixty wildlife painters, sculptors and carvers will travel to Tulsa to sell their own original creations and reproductions. A competition among artists has developed for entry into the NatureWorks show. Applications from artists outnumber slots 11 to 1. These artists are the top in wildlife and landscape from 21states,
one from Ontario,
Canada, one from New
South Wales,
Australia and one
from Gauteng, South
Africa.
Laura
Mark-Finberg is the
featured artist this
year from Pequea,
PA.
Laura, who works
primarily in
acrylic, is
meticulous in her
research and
attention to
detail. Eyes are
her favorite part of
her subject to
paint. “Sometime
I’ll do the eyes
first. If I’ve
created life in the
eyes, the rest of
the painting seems
to paint itself. At
other times I’ll
wait to the end,
almost as if there’s
a reward for
completing the
piece. My favorite
subjects are the
predators. Unlike
some animals, there
is such awareness in
the eyes.”
Laura has traveled extensively, and her research has
taken her to such divergent places as Afghanistan,
Kashmir and Venezuela. She and her husband, Barry,
once climbed a sheer cliff to photograph rocks at
the top. That adventure resulted in a painting of a
peregrine falcon.
The 1999 NatureWorks Art Show & Sale selected Laura
as Best of Show. She was the Featured Artist in the
1998 Kansas City National Wildlife Art Show and has
won the Pennsylvania State Conservation Print on
three occasions. Laura has worked with conversation
groups throughout her career. “She was one of
sixteen artists from across North America selected
through ‘The International Treaty Support Fund’ to
work on a limited edition leather-bound book on
endangered species.”
The show is run by NatureWorks, a Tulsa non-profit organization. Proceeds go to support wildlife conservation efforts and help implement programs that encourage wildlife appreciation. As a separate program, NatureWorks also provides the Oklahoma Wildlife Stewardship Award. Together with its patrons, NatureWorks will donate the
eighteenth bronze to the City of Tulsa this year. Most are seen in Tulsa’s River Parks.
Tickets are available at the door for $5. Hours for Saturday,
Feb. 23rd are 10 a.m to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24th are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show is held at the RENAISSANCE Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center 6808 S 107th E. Avenue ( 71st and US-169). For more information visit www.natureworks.org or call 296-4ART.
